Good Clear Skies
  • Well the last few nights have been excellent for stargazing, I have mainly been looking at the moon and the planet Saturn..the moon as been fabulous the mountains the craters the flat plains wer just beautiful to look at, using 2x barlow and 90x mag was just right .i actually felt i was slowing giding a few mile over the surface as the moon drifted across the scope i managed also to get some movie film usin my digi cam was rally happy with that...Saturn as looked great too the rings and the cassini div showed up well and also some cloud belt shades the moon titon was easy to spot and also i so 3 pin pricks of light which i presume were other moons of saturn.so roughly 4 nights looking at the moonb and saturn..mars as been difficult only appearing as a orangey/red disk about the size of this letter >O< and very bright but no chance of seeing any markings..highlights for me i so also a few shooting stars and when a jet liner passed infront of the moon while i was observing was neat leaft its trail of smoke for a few mins looked quite nice...Well its cloudy tonight so i guess i get to watch a movie and relax..untill the next clear night when i thinks i`m going to pick out a couple of rich constellation and slowly observe and see wat i can see....hope you all ad good clear nights lately and hope you too enjoyed the beautiful starlit skies...till next time..Philbod

  • sorry about the shakey pictures but was holding my cam up to the lense
  • Wow, a jet liner passing in front of the Moon while you were observing! That's happened to me, kind of makes you nearly jump out of your skin :-)

Nice video Philbod! Good shot of the Vallis Alpes (Alpine Valley), a 103 mile long, 6 mile wide lunar valley cutting through the mountains http://www.esa.int/esaMI/SMART-1/SEMM7R7X9DE_0.html

...and the chain of peaks of the Montes Apenninus, with the crater Copernicus deep in shadow, but with its edges lit by the Sun.
  • Thanks Betelguese for the comments...was a very enjoyable few nights of clear skies..the moon film tis a bit shaky as im just hold the cam over the eyepiece..i will have to get a map of the moon then i know wat craters and mountain ranges etc im viewing...but when not looking in the cam trying to film...just me and the scope well the views wer stunning so sharp ..really does feel like yur peacfully gliding over the surface....its a lovely nite ere again tonite the moon not quite a full moon so shud see some nice surface features again tonite..also saturn again will be nice for me will try and catch saturn on a short bit of film too..thanks also for the naming of some of wat i av filmed as this will help me too...until i get a good detailed map..hope to chat again soon..hope too yur skies are as clear for you as they are ere..Philbod
