Supernova in The Whirlpool Galaxy M51
  • I was out imaging M51 last with the recent chatter about the supernova, I managed to captured the supernova and my friends have confirmed it, checking images from May-June 2011. Even with my limited set up of the 120mm refractor and EQ5 the supernova shows up nicely. The images are about the limit of my equipment estimated mag of +11 - 16, no official estimate yet!
The images are on my blog: http://rays-place-on-the-net.blogspot.com/

  • That's amazing, and it really does show up good. A massive star ripped itself apart in a collosal blast 37 million years ago, and Ray imaged it !! Great cluster images too.
  • That just blows my mind, to be able to photograph a star exploding in another galaxy millions of light years from us. Its just incredible, and I would love to take pictures like that
