Jupiter's moons
  • Is there anyway that I can identify Jupiter's moons ?
  • jack
The problem is the moons are rotating and thus appear close or far from Jupiter depending on its orbital position.
Another (easier?) way to determine which is which at any given time is to download Stellarium (its free), then you can check what it shows you from your location/time compared what you see in the scope.
  • Thanks guys much appreciated :D!
  • Could I have seen one of Jupiters moons with only 10 x 25 binoculars please. It was a very faint looking star at about the position of the 7 or 8 on a clock. I have looked at the wesite photo and yours is the wrong way round.
    Thanks Sue
  • holding my binos (8x40) against a steady wall i can see all 4 main moons - they appear as points of light in a straight line with the planet.
