very nice moon, love it when its like that. i got a couple of nice pics with my mobile phone and scope before the clouds came in. it cleared up after a few hours and i am just back in from a bit more observing.
What is the moons position away from venus? It seems like the bright object about 5 degrees lower to the right of the moon is too bright. I dont see too many other objects close to the moon.
When the Moon, especially the crescent Moon, is close to a bright planet like Venus it does catch people attention.
It looks slightly out of the ordinary.
But yeah Stephen, Venus has definitely been responsible for some panicky people thinking alien intelligence is paying a visit !
But considering astronomers spend quite a lot of their time looking up at the stars, it's not them that report ufos. It's usually always non astronomers. That's because astronomers know everything that's up there moving, or non moving. Planets, meteors, satellites, ISS...
"This thing was flying above the trees following my every movent as I was driving my car, it was very bright, must have been 500 ft across" ...er Venus :-)
lol thats right betelgeuse. i remember a guy asking me on the way home from work, what the hell is that!? is that a comet headed for us!? i told him to relax its just venus! venus reflects something like two thirds of the light it gets i think?
hi bluemoon. before i make a suggestion can you tell me what you would like to look at? is it planets or deep sky objects or both? what is your budget? the bigger the scope you can afford the better but that doesnt mean you wont see anything with a small scope.
Hi stephen. I enjoy looking at the moon surface, planets and bright stars nothing too serious.I had an old scope on a tripod for the longest time but i recently moved and i must have damaged it or something. and was getting way too much peripheral glare and just couldn't focus it. I guess I could probably spend a couple hundred or so. Thanks for your reply.
Hi Bluemoon A Sky-Watcher Explorer-130P (EQ2) Parabolic Newtonian Reflector is a very good starter telescope. About £140-160. or a Sky-Watcher SKYMAX-127 SupaTrak Auto Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope about £220 i have one of these and it's Fantastic. atb karl
