Tonight, I finally managed to track down Hind's Crimson Star just to the west of the constellation Lepus the Hare, just beneath Orion. I couldn't believe its depth of colour. Looked like one tail light in amongst a hundred headlights! Well worth a look.
That looks like an interesting target. However, I can appreciate that when something is that tricky to locate in even in the virtual world of stellarium them it must be a challenge to find in the real night sky.
It does look like it lines up perfectly with Mintaka and Rigel so it might be easier to find using those two stars in Orion as pointers and working your way down? I will see if i can find it later in the week.
Hi Champagnerocker, it really is an interesting target. Hind himself said that it appeared "like a drop of blood on a black field." Apparently, it's a variable carbon star that is reddest when its at its dimmest. I found it by nudging the scope up from the centre of the trapezoid of stars just to the west of the star that forms the base of the Hare's ears. Hope you find it! Bob
