Good day to all, I was wondering if anyone could possibly help me with my first binocular purchase please? Being an avid "sky at night" viewer for the last 30 years I have a severe childlike urge to get my self out there and peep at the optical delights of the night sky. I purchased a small 60mm telescope a few years back but where I live is very light polluted indeed. I have been rubbing my hands together in excitement in the thought that I can get myself some binoculars and get myself in a few midnight bikerides with my backpack and a pair of eyeball telescopes. If anyone could help me I would be most obliged. I have been looking on the computer for the last week or so and even though everything I have read is pointing me in the right direction I am at a loss at what set up to pick.

Do I get some 15x70's (the celestron skymasters are jumping out at me)?, do I get a monopod or a tripod? (dont really want to be lugging a large tripod around in my backpack, but I will if needs be). Do I get smaller binoculars? (dont want to get small ones and then find out I could do with the larger ones, couldnt afford it).

Any help on this matter will be outstanding and very helpful.

Many many thanks.

have a nice day folks

catdubbs.

p.s I posted a blog on stargazers lounge last night and a nice bloke "raygil" pointed me in this direction mentioning that "john" might be able to help me but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Hey folks,
Broke my cherry on a couple of things last week, got a nice clear night and armed myself with my 10x50's in the middle of nowhere. Now! This made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end........ you guys have probably seen it all before but I got a nice view of the Great Nebula in Orion for the first time and then (outstanding) .... got my first view of Andromeda. I was speechless, absolutely stunning. And just to polish a great night off, my first view of Mars and Venus followed by a couple of meteors. What a lovely thing to be doing in the wee hours.

Take it easy folks and fingers crossed for clear skies. Have a nice day.
Andy

Good day to all,

Had my first decent trip out a couple of weeks ago with my first pair of binoculars (ended up with the Elinor 10x50's) and apart from a bent back, creaky neck and wobbly arms (think I might need a tripod?), I was absolutely blown away!!!. Should have done this years ago!. OUTSTANDING!

I had a decent dark clear night and checked out Cygnus and anything else I could see for about 3 hours, I think that might be the best thing my eyeballs have ever seen in my entire 39 years of life!.

The Bino's themselves are pretty good I think? (I have nothing to compare them too), The only thing I have noticed is when I am looking at the stars there doesn't seem to be as much light (dimmer image by quite a lot) coming through the right lens and some stars seem slightly smudged which no amount of focus will amend? (this doesnt seem to happen with terrestrial viewing where both lenses seem clear and sharp with which ever eye you use in which ever lens? My guts telling me that there is a fault in the right side. Both eyes in the left side are clear, both in the right side are dimmed.

That said, I am absolutely humbled by what I can see through them!, This is something I should have done many moons ago and I cannot wait to get out there again.

Unfortunately got pulled by the police as 3.00am on my way back home. I should have thought about that a bit more. A 39 year old bloke with a hat and a beard peddeling down country lanes with binoculars at three in the morning, It wasn't me officer!.

Have a nice day.

Catdubbs
